Dans un des textes composant Avec Grotowski* — ouvrage consacré au travail du metteur en scène polonais — Peter Brook revient sur la question de la réalité, et plus précisément de la réalité au théâtre. Envisageant les deux facettes de cette notion complexe, ce dernier fait remarquer qu’au delà du « côté visible, tangible, sensuel de la réalité », il existe un côté invisible « qui englobe, transcende et anime cette réalité visible ». « Grotowski tendait vers la réalité invisible », explique Peter Brook, « il en parlait comme de quelque chose que l’on atteint en grimpant verticalement, une véritable ascension. » Cette idée d’élévation, d’escalade mystérieuse vers l’invisible, revient à soutenir que le théâtre — quel que soit le courant esthétique qui le traverse — ne peut tendre à une quelconque forme d’aboutissement, d’ampleur ou de résonance, s’il se voit cantonné à sa seule dimension horizontale. Spectacle de conception purement psychologique et naturaliste, La Chapelle-en-Brie se révèle l’exemple symptomatique d’un théâtre qui n’a pas su répondre à cette exigence de verticalité. Ne réussissant pas à dépasser le stade des bonnes intentions, Alain Gautré signe une création plate et fastidieuse. Une création qui voudrait faire se succéder, par petites touches, comique et tragique, mais qui n’y parvient pas.
Théâtre horizontal et théâtre vertical
Car ni le tragique, ni le comique (de caractère, de situation, de mots, de geste… : les tentatives sont vastes) ne parviennent à s’imposer. Aucun trouble et aucun saisissement ne viennent conférer un peu de vie à ces retrouvailles familiales ressemblant à tant de retrouvailles familiales déjà entendues au théâtre. Des retrouvailles qui, très souvent, ne servent que de prétextes à des enfilades de règlements de comptes et de révélations tapageuses. La Chapelle-en-Brie ne fait pas exception à la règle. Ici, quatre frères (Patrick Bonnel, Jean-Pierre Darroussin, Pascal Elso, Philippe Risler) reviennent inopinément dans la ferme qui les a vus grandir, affichant leurs différences et ressassant leurs rancœurs. On est bien loin des comédies noires italiennes des années 1950-1960 desquelles Alain Gautré avoue vouloir s’inspirer. Car les comédiens réunis par le metteur en scène tournent en rond, ne réussissant pas à trouver la singularité et l’intériorité qui auraient pu faire oublier le manque d’inspiration du texte. Et permettre une avancée vers un début de verticalité.
