Soucieuse de « décaper le vernis du pittoresque » qui obscurcit le théâtre d’O’Casey au point d’en faire une œuvre folklorique et datée, enfermée « dans un univers de brocante et de naphtaline », Irène Bonnaud a renoncé à son contexte historique initial, l’insurrection de Pâques 1916 à Dublin, pour le transposer dans le Belfast du début des années 80, modernisant la langue et les costumes et choisissant un environnement musical qui appuie la vitalité, la colère et les pulsations rock’n’roll d’une intrigue diablement dynamique. La scénographie de Claire Le Gal invente un décor en tournette offrant successivement à la vue du spectateur l’extérieur de l’immeuble où habitent la troupe de joyeux lurons qui hante cette histoire de guerre, d’amour et d’amitié, l’intérieur de l’appartement de Nora, l’héroïne sacrifiée, et le pub dans lequel tous se retrouvent pour lamper du whisky et échanger des noms d’oiseaux. Scènes de farce, de mélodrame, de séduction, de bagarre alternent à une telle vitesse qu’on rit en même temps qu’on pleure au spectacle des malheurs poignants émaillés de gags désopilants de cette armée de bras cassés.
Un formidable travail d’ensemble
Nora et Jack forment le noyau du groupe et de l’histoire. Autour d’eux, Coucou, le cousin marxiste (Dan Artus excelle en roquet idéologue), le vieil oncle ancien combattant, un ivrogne qui répare les serrures, une pute (Sophie-Aude Picon, un vrai bonheur de gouaille lascive) et des voisines (que leur haute moralité n’empêche pas de piller allègrement la ville prise entre deux feux) parmi lesquelles Bessie Burgess que campe une Martine Schambacher au sommet de son génie ! Béquille à la main, cheveux carotte et dégaine de harengère mal embouchée, la comédienne incarne avec une vérité, une émotion et une drôlerie hallucinantes ce personnage exécrable et attachant qu’elle impose comme le pivot et le parangon de ce petit peuple grotesquement lâche et sublimement courageux, tout en contradictions, héroïque et veule, prêt à descendre avec la même vitesse les verres d’alcool et l’ennemi héréditaire… Irène Bonnaud retrouve ici presque tous les comédiens qu’elle avait dirigés dans Music Hall 56 et dans Le Prince travesti. La fluidité du jeu et la communion entre les acteurs doivent sans doute beaucoup à cette habitude du travail ensemble qui, pour sa troisième création bourguignonne, donne encore une fois un résultat de remarquable tenue et de haute intelligence théâtrale et scénique.
