Ce film français, réalisé par Jean Epstein en 1928 d’après la nouvelle d’Edgar Allan Poe, distille une étrange lenteur crépusculaire traversée de fantômes. « C’est ce monde-là, à l’orée des songes ou de la mort, qui m’intéresse, ou me fascine », prévient Gérard Hourbette, directeur d’Art Zoyd. Le cinéma est devenu un axe de travail privilégié dans la démarche du groupe Art Zoyd. « Je considère le film comme un livret d’opéra… Défi artistique passionnant car il ne se satisfait jamais de l’illustration, redondante, ou d’une lecture qui se voudrait définitive, trop fermée et sans subtilité. J’essaie de trouver une interprétation profondément personnelle et risquée de l’œuvre » souligne-t-il. Art Zoyd aime à puiser dans les ressources sonores des instruments électroniques pour faire jaillir l’imaginaire fantasmatique de la musique. « J’aime frotter mon écriture à celles d’autres compositeurs, amis ou associés, les confronter pour révéler des contrastes ou des concordances. J’obtiens ainsi une œuvre hybride, une méta-musique qui sonne comme une fête foraine où percerait le tumulte de la vie. C’est-à-dire la musique même de la vie » explique Gérard Hourbette. Sa partition pour le film croise et lie entre elles sa musique et celle de ses complices Didier Casamitjana, Patricia Dallio et Kasper T. Toeplitz.
Le CD de « La Chute de la Maison Usher » est disponible depuis janvier chez Orkhêstra International/label Impossible Records.
