Raymond Vinciguerra s’est ici emparé d’un texte romanesque fait pour le théâtre : face à un interlocuteur rencontré dans un bar, Jean-Baptiste Clamence procède à un long monologue, un récit de sa vie où il se dépouille des illusions qu’il pouvait se faire sur sa bonne nature. Accompagné de la musique lancinante de Philip Glass et sur un plateau dépouillé, Philippe Séjourné incarnera cet ancien avocat, théâtral et dissimulateur, hanté par le souvenir d’une jeune fille suicidée dans la Seine : tandis qu’il passe sur le pont, elle se noie dans les eaux noires du fleuve, et il ne fait rien… La chute de cet homme, tandis qu’il se croyait porté par de nobles sentiments, consiste à plonger à la suite de cette jeune fille dans les eaux troubles des motifs dirigeant chaque action humaine. Une déchéance morale et sociale qui trouve sa contrepartie dans une lucidité coupante.
