Le Chinois, comme chacun sait, est « lubrique ». L’Arabe, lui, est réputé « fourbe » et « sodomite ». L’indigène a une vie « essentiellement végétative et instinctive », c’est un constat. Ce chapelet de clichés, solidement cloué au dos de l’histoire, enfile quelques-unes des plus tenaces représentations des indigènes. Ces idées reçues, calcifiées dans l’imaginaire populaire depuis les débuts de l’expansion coloniale française en Afrique du Nord, ne proviennent pas de quelques bréviaires xénophobes, collections de portraits racistes et autres recueils de pensées nauséeuses commis par d’impénitents chauvins. Les citations sont signées Montesquieu et Tocqueville, Lamartine et Maupassant, Flaubert et Pierre Loti, Gide, Conrad et Simenon. Autant de regards de l’Occident jetés sur l’Autre, le barbare lointain, autant d’imageries adossées à la bonne conscience scientifique et littéraire.
Les "bienfaits" de la colonisation
« Je voulais m’intéresser au pouvoir de ceux qui détiennent la parole publique dans la fabrication de cet imaginaire, dans la fabrication des clichés, dans la fabrication des généralisations, ceux qui ont un pouvoir énorme pour modeler l’imaginaire collectif et par là, les comportements collectifs. Ce pouvoir est d’autant plus dangereux aujourd’hui, avec tous les moyens de communication dont nous disposons, si on ne sait pas le manipuler quand on le détient. », explique Lotfi Achour, qui murissait le sujet depuis longtemps. « Le projet de loi sur les "bienfaits" de la colonisation commençait à libérer aussi une parole qui n’avait pas osé s’exprimer jusqu’alors, celle par exemple d’une Hélène Carrère d’Encausse qui reliait les émeutes en banlieue à la polygamie, ou celle d’un Finkielkraut affirmant que la colonisation a apporté la civilisation aux sauvages ! Et j’en passe… ». Le metteur en scène tunisien a prélevé sa matière en puisant à diverses sources : écrits scientifiques (ou considérés comme tel) sur l’inégalité des races, textes de grands écrivains, principalement du XIXe, chansons exotiques et coloniales, débats à la Chambre des Députés entre 1830 et 1847… A partir de ces éléments composites, il a filé une comédie acide sur les images fantasmatiques, souvent encore bien accrochées, qui filtrent à notre insu la relation à l’autre. « Le barbare est d’abord celui qui croit à la barbarie. » selon Claude Levi-Strauss.
