Metteur en scène versé dans le théâtre contemporain et réalisateur ne reculant pas devant les sujets délicats, Michael Sturminger porte sur l’opéra un regard très personnel. Sa fréquentation des opéras de Mozart (L’Enlèvement au sérail, Cosi fan tutte, Le Songe de Scipion, La Clémence de Titus) lui a ainsi suggéré un opéra, écrit avec le compositeur Bernhard Lang et intitulé I hate Mozart. Homme de paradoxes, qui n’aime rien tant que l’opéra bâti sur un texte solide, il a mis en scène aussi bien Ligeti (Le Grand Macabre) que Gluck (Orphée et Eurydice) et collabore régulièrement avec le compositeur HK Grüber. Sa Comédie infernale est une « soirée pour orchestre, deux sopranos et acteur », conçue avec l’organiste et compositeur Martin Haselböck pour l’acteur américain John Malkovich, et convoque des musiques de Vivaldi, Boccherini, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven et Weber chantées par les sopranos Laura Aikin et Aleksandra Zamojska.
