L’oeuvre de Merce Cunningham (1919-2009) continue de nous dépasser : on peine à la mesurer, à l’incorporer, tant elle a ouvert de portes et profondément remis en jeu les conceptions de la danse. On la résume parfois en quelques mots-clés – le hasard, la séparation danse/musique, le mouvement expressif en lui-même, les events, la remise en cause de la construction classique de l’espace – mais ces concepts sont loin de nous fournir les outils nécessaires pour rendre compte de la fascination qui surgit chez le spectateur : face aux oeuvres, on est emporté par cette danse à la fois extraordinairement virtuose et fragile, précisément dessinée dans l’espace et pourtant insaisissable…
Un parcours dans l’oeuvre
Dans le cadre du « Legacy Tour » imaginé par Merce Cunningham, il nous est donné, une dernière fois, de faire cette expérience. Les deux programmes présentés au Théâtre de la Ville sont composés de pièces emblématiques : du 15 au 18 décembre, on pourra ainsi revoir Suite for five (1956-58), Quartet (1982) et Xover (2007). Du 20 au 23 décembre, seront présentés Rainforest (1968), Duets (1980), Biped (1999). On parle souvent « du » travail de Cunningham, comme s’il était homogène : ce parcours à travers le temps nous donne au contraire à goûter sa diversité, et les multiples voies expérimentées par le chorégraphe. Cunningham a aussi créé une technique, fondé une compagnie unique au monde, développé une pensée novatrice de la danse et du travail du danseur… Ces multiples facettes seront à l’honneur lors d’une journée Cunningham, le 18 décembre : initiation à la technique Cunningham pour les non-danseurs, ateliers pour enfants, films, rencontre autour de l’écriture cunninghamienne jalonneront cette journée, qui rappelle que l’oeuvre d’un chorégraphe va bien au-delà de ses pièces…
