C’est pour Peter Brook que Jean-Claude Carrière s’empara, à la fin des années soixante-dix, de ce conte du xiiie siècle, chef-d’oeuvre de la littérature persane qui a inspiré des générations d’écrivains et d’artistes d’Orient et d’Occident. L’adaptation de Jean-Claude Carrière avait inspiré, dès 1985, un opéra au compositeur Michaël Levinas. Rien d’étonnant à cela puisque le chant, expression de la beauté du monde, est évidemment au cœur de l’oeuvre, qui narre le voyage – intérieur et mystique autant qu’aérien – d’oiseaux en quête de Simurgh, l’oiseau royal symbole de vie. Cette production du Théâtre du Balcon donne elle aussi toute sa place à la musique, ainsi qu’à l’improvisation. Sur scène, le pianiste Roland Conil, compositeur de la musique du spectacle, et la multi-instrumentiste Nathalie Waller se joignent à la conteuse Aïni Iften et aux acteurs Elsa Stirnemann et Serge Barbuscia. Un dialogue des arts – musique et poésie – et des cultures – Orient et Occident – qu’aurait très certainement apprécié Olivier Messiaen. On peut d’ailleurs voir dans ce spectacle une forme d’hommage au compositeur natif d’Avignon, qui plus qu’aucun autre fit chanter par sa musique tout l’univers des oiseaux.
