À l’arrivée des conquérants espagnols, les civilisations indiennes d’Amérique ont dû périr. La Controverse de Valladolid entre Bartolomé de Las Casas, ex-évêque au Mexique et le théologien Gines de Sépulvéda, s’engage en 1550. La dispute se déroule face à Ronciéri, le légat du Pape venu trancher la question de savoir si les Indiens possèdent ou non une âme. Las Casas dénonce le bain de sang de l’évangélisation indienne, un chaos dû à la cruauté des conquérants, massacrant corps et biens de leurs victimes. Philippe Pierrard incarne avec bonhomie, patience et passion la clairvoyance de ce moine dominicain incompris en son temps. Face à lui, Jean-Pierre Billaud, docte théologien pour qui les sous-hommes en question adorent des idoles et s’adonnent à la fornication et au cannibalisme. Un couple d’Indiens apeurés est d’ailleurs exposé sur la scène, un témoignage de prétendue animalité. Avec les comédiens Géraude Ayeva-Derman et Tito Diez, la scène réaliste joue l’émotion. Les Indien sont déclarés humains. Mais un codicille est ajouté à l’acte : les Noirs d’Afrique serviront d’esclaves au Nouveau Monde. Le spectacle vise à représenter l’âpreté du débat sur l’évaluation inique des ethnies.
