« Entre la coupe et les lèvres, il reste encore la place pour un malheur », dit le proverbe. Ainsi en va-t-il du destin de Charles Franck, héros de La coupe et les lèvres, étrange pièce de Musset publiée en 1832. Le cœur brûlé par l’idéal romantique d’une vie dénouée de ses attaches sociales, le jeune homme enflamme la maison natale un soir de frénésie, quitte sa douce aimée et s’en va sur les grands chemins de l’aventure, guidé par l’instinct d’une puissante nature. Il finira par s’abimer dans la débauche et la désillusion… Dans ce poème dramatique écrit comme une confession, Musset glisse l’apologie d’un anarchisme désespéré face à la terne réalité d’une société trop étriquée. « Le malaise de Franck est proche de celui de la jeunesse actuelle, de plus en plus désenchantée et inquiète face à la montée de l’individualisme dans une société qui a perdu toute perspective politique. » note Jean-Pierre Garnier, qui a déjà abordé ces thématiques avec L’éveil du printemps de Wedekind, Les enfants d’Edward Bond et Sweet home d’Arnaud Catherine. Guidant les onze acteurs comme un chœur, le metteur en scène fait résonner les questionnements d’une jeune génération en quête d’avenir.
