Darius Milhaud pour la musique, Blaise Cendrars pour le livret, Fernand Léger pour les décors et les costumes, Jean Börlin pour la chorégraphie… En 1923, ces artistes audacieux imaginaient l’origine du monde en Afrique et bousculaient les regards blanchis par la bonne conscience avec La Création du monde, dansée par les Ballets suédois. Découvrant ce premier ballet d’inspiration « nègre », Faustin Linyekula y entendit résonner ses propres réflexions. « Que voit-on vraiment quand on regarde du côté de l’Afrique ? » demande le chorégraphe d’origine congolaise, qui, de pièce en pièce, gratte le sang caillé du présent pour mettre à vif la mémoire collective de son pays. Reprenant la partition avec les 26 danseurs du Ballet de Lorraine, il met l’œuvre historique en dialogue avec notre époque et l’insère dans un questionnement sur le rapport entre l’individu et la communauté. « Avant de parler de communauté, on a besoin d’individus qui soient responsables et qui choisissent de construire cette communauté. » ajoute-t-il. Avec lui, le geste chorégraphique ressort toujours d’un positionnement politique.
