En 1662, Molière a épousé Armande Béjart, de 20 ans sa cadette, et non sans rapport, il écrit l’Ecole des femmes, plaidoyer pour qu’en amour triomphent les inclinaisons naturelles. La pièce, qui use d’une forme de réalisme psychologique – plutôt par exemple que de jouer de la figure comique du barbon – subit des critiques violentes, venues notamment de la troupe concurrente de l’Hôtel de Bourgogne. En réaction, Molière écrit cette comédie en un acte : La Critique de l’Ecole des femmes, vive et drôle discussion de salon où les personnages s’opposent au sujet de ladite Ecole des femmes. On y parle de morale bien sûr, mais aussi de règles classiques, de ce que doit être une bonne comédie, de la nécessité de plaire et du désir de faire rire. Après avoir assisté notamment Patrice Chéreau dans l’exercice, Clément Hervieu-Léger, pensionnaire de la Comédie Française, signe là sa première mise en scène collective. Au-delà du plaisir que procurent inévitablement les jeux de mise en abyme – « Que vous êtes, Madame, une rude joueuse en critique, et que je plains le pauvre Molière de vous avoir pour ennemie! » – la pièce rend au plateau sa fonction polémique et réaffirme sa propension à être en prise directe avec les débats de la société qui l’entoure. C’est un Molière engagé dont cette pièce brosse le portrait.
