On parle souvent de « transmission de la culture », qu’est-ce que vous inspire cette mission ?
Jacques Coursil : L’être humain est un animal culturel, la culture appartient à sa nature. Pour les ethnologues, la culture est tout ce qui donne à l’activité humaine forme et sens. Elle consiste en une foule de notions, de prescriptions et d’interdits spécifiques, et perdure en éduquant ses membres. Le mot culture tend aussi à remplacer celui de civilisation qui suppose une hiérarchisation des sociétés et bien entendu une mission (civilisatrice) ou un choc.
L’état, à travers le ministère de la Culture, serait donc un donneur d’ordres, en nous « cultivant ».
J. C. : De tout temps et partout, les princes, les grands mécènes ou les Etats soutiennent les arts qui, par retour, les soutiennent : « France, mère des arts, des armes et des lois ». Que l’Etat mette des moyens pour fabriquer un IRCAM sans lequel il n’y aurait pas de musique contemporaine en France, on ne peut que s’en féliciter. Les arts et les artistes ainsi soutenus sont à la fois des enjeux et des agents culturels et s’en accommodent. Quant à éduquer les peuples – les cultiver, dites-vous –, j’en frémis rien que d’y penser.
Quelle est la place des artistes, censés être les véhicules de la culture…
J. C. : Toute éducation consiste à faire passer une part du champ social dans l’individu, qu’on apprenne à planter des radis ou à jouer du violon dans un conservatoire. Mais il faut éviter l’amalgame : la culture n’est pas de l’information à transmettre. « Transmission, véhicule de la culture », on est en pleine métaphore autoroutière qui peut nous jouer des tours. Ainsi, un ignare est quelqu’un qui ne peut même pas raconter un bout de sa propre histoire. Mais un inculte, c’est quoi ? Par exemple, on peut dire, par jeu de langage, que certains savants sont incultes parce qu’ils ne savent rien d’autre que ce qu’ils savent, mais on ne dira pas d’eux qu’ils sont ignares. On peut dire encore que certains musiciens n’ont aucune culture musicale, mais avouons, même si c’est souvent le cas, que c’est tout de même moins grave que de ne pas avoir d’oreille.
Un artiste doit-il poser des questions plus que d’infliger des réponses ?
J. C. : L’art n’a réponse à rien, mais opère des déplacements forts. Dès qu’on change de point de vue, tout redevient question. Les artistes sont donc là pour mettre au jour de nouvelles perspectives. Ils déplacent la culture et la déstabilisent. Sinon, on la trouve convenue, ringarde et peu originale. Grâce à leur travail contre-culturel, en quelque sorte, la culture, plutôt que figée, devient autophage et heureuse. La culture (haute), c’est connu, présuppose toujours la répartition de la société en classes et ce n’est pas le rôle des artistes de soutenir pareille division. Toutefois, il est vrai que je n’entre pas dans un musée pour me divertir ni non plus pour m’instruire. L’éblouissement de l’art n’entre dans aucune de ces deux catégories. Mais la frontière entre divertissement et culture est poreuse. Cet entre-deux, à mon sens, est toute la question : c’est là où tout se passe. Quand on lui en donne les moyens, la culture se transmet toute seule. Elle transpire, elle rayonne.
