Opéra Garnier / Ballet de l’Opéra de Paris / chor. John Neumeier
L’histoire est celle de Marguerite Gautier, courtisane parisienne, et d’Armand Duval, jeune homme de bonne famille. Séparés par le père de ce dernier, l’héroïne meurt atteinte de tuberculose, dans la solitude et le dénuement. Drame romantique s’il en est, La Dame aux Camélias a trouvé dans le ballet un terrain d’expression privilégiée. Le roman d’Alexandre Dumas fils a fait aussi l’objet d’innombrables adaptations au théâtre, au cinéma, et à l’opéra avec La Traviata. John Neumeier, néanmoins, eut l’intelligence d’adapter le roman pour le rendre lisible, chorégraphiquement parlant, en resserrant le propos et en se concentrant sur l’affect. Jouant avec maestria du flashback et du théâtre dans le théâtre, mettant en perspective L’Histoire de Manon et celle de Marguerite Gautier, notre héroïne, il approfondit la psychologie de ses personnages, pourtant si difficile à caractériser dans le ballet. Créé pour la grande Marcia Haydée et le Ballet de Stuttgart en 1978 et entré au répertoire de l’Opéra de Paris en 2006, ce chef-d’œuvre de Neumeier prend le large sur la musique de Chopin, et nous entraîne sur un océan d’émotions contradictoires.
