Tous les jours, Ellida se baigne dans l’eau du fjord, comme pour calmer cette « irrésistible nostalgie de la mer » dans laquelle elle a sombré depuis la mort de son enfant. Son mari, le docteur Wangel, essaie de soigner sa mélancolie en rappelant auprès d’elle un ancien ami, espérant que les amours défuntes puissent faire renaître son désir moribond. A l’occasion de ses retrouvailles avec Arnholm et de la rencontre avec un jeune sculpteur, elle avoue l’ancienne passion qui la hante : elle a été autrefois fiancée à un marin dont le souvenir l’obnubile. Celui-là revient alors de la mer pour la chercher, mais, contre toute attente, Ellida choisit de renoncer au fantasme, et demeure auprès de son mari, même si celui-ci a finalement accepté de la laisser partir. Le metteur en scène Claude Baqué a choisi de confier le rôle d’Ellida à la jeune chanteuse Camille, tombée « sous le charme de cette femme si moderne qui, justement, s’applique à rompre le charme », et met en scène l’histoire de cette « sirène devenue femme ».
