Comment avez-vous découvert le Wetr ?
Régine Chopinot : Les voyages ont toujours fait partie de mon travail. Se déplacer, c’est nécessaire pour un danseur : c’est une attitude de recherche, d’autant plus simple à mettre en œuvre que le matériau de la danse est abstrait et ne pose pas de frontières de langue. Depuis 2009, je mène un projet « Pacifique Sud », qui m’a conduite en Nouvelle-Calédonie, où j’ai naturellement rencontré le Wetr. Ce groupe existe depuis plus de vingt ans et s’est réapproprié les danses, chants et musique disparus suite à la colonisation française. Je vais travailler avec eux deux fois par an : depuis que j’ai quitté le CCN de La Rochelle, en 2008, j’œuvre avec moins de moyens, et souvent dans l’urgence, mais un tel projet ne peut voir le jour que sur le long terme.
Vous signez cette création avec Umune Hnamano, l’un des fondateurs du Wetr, et vous serez sur le plateau avec 11 membres du groupe. Allez-vous bouleverser leurs habitudes, leur proposer de nouvelles façons de faire ?
R. C. : Dès que l’on parle de culture « folklorique », « traditionnelle », on fige quelque chose. Ce n’est donc pas de cette façon que j’envisage de travailler. Je souhaite proposer aux artistes d’exprimer certains de leurs talents qu’ils n’ont pas l’occasion d’exercer lorsqu’ils sont dans le rôle d’« ambassadeurs de la culture Kanak »… Les artistes du Wetr savent bien que la survie de leur art passe par une adaptation continuelle au vivant. Ils sont prêts à tout absorber, avec beaucoup d’humour.
La tradition et le renouvellement sont des questions centrales pour les cultures orales, mais aussi pour les danseurs… Quelle place la mémoire et l’interrogation du patrimoine chorégraphique ont-elles dans votre travail ?
R. C. : Je n’ai jamais voulu marcher dans mes propres pas. Mais aujourd’hui – notamment en m’interrogeant sur mon travail à partir des questions que m’ouvre le Wetr – je rassemble toute mon expérience. Je m’apprête notamment à revisiter quelques-unes des pièces qui ont été des œuvres clés pour moi : Appel d’air, K.O.K., Végétal, W.H.A. A 60 ans, il est temps pour moi de me réapproprier mon travail. J’ai toujours ouvert de nouveaux chemins : le moment est venu de les rassembler, et ce rassemblement est lui aussi un chemin à part entière, qui ouvre sur de nouvelles explorations.
