« Nous étreignons les âmes de ceux qui avant nous s’en allèrent et ils nous confèrent leur force. Voilà d’où vient le pouvoir illimité du Bûto », écrivait Tatsumi Hijikata (1928-1986), inventeur du Bûto, résistant contre la modernité factice de la surenchère consommatoire. « Hijikata inventait le Bûto comme en réponse aux actes de Bataille, de Genet, d’Artaud ; et nous nous pourrions bien ramener ceux-ci chez nous, corps fantômes digérés dans le Butô, celui-ci à son tour digéré par l’histoire, les années, le travail que nous effectuons. » remarque Boris Charmatz. Nous, c’est Jeanne Balibar et lui. Elle, comédienne, et lui, danseur et chorégraphe. Loin de se complaire dans les clichés exotiques d’un lointain Japon, ils ont puisé dans l’œuvre poétique de l’artiste japonais, parmi des traductions inédites de Patrick de Vos, et ont cherché la danse dans le texte. Ensemble, ils ont imaginé un « véhicule » pour le corps et la pensée du maître Hijikata fondus entre les lignes… pour faire surgir cette fascinante « danse du corps obscur ».
