L’homme git seul, au milieu du silence. La nuit brûle ses dernières lueurs. Il s’appelle Krapp, il a soixante-dix ans et s’apprête à livrer au magnétophone la chronique de son année écoulée. Avant, peut-être pour retrouver le fil de sa vie, il réécoute de vieilles bobines enregistrées voici trente ans. C’est lui et pourtant un autre qu’il entend. La voix d’autrefois porte encore un désir plein de rage, d’illuminations, d’euphorie et de possibles amours. S’installe alors un étrange dialogue entre Krapp et lui-même. Un dialogue traversé de colères, de soupirs et de regrets imbibés de vapeurs d’alcool…
Relever le défi
« J’ai toujours senti une parenté avec le monde de Beckett. Il est, d’une certaine manière, trop proche de mon travail. » confie Robert Wilson, qui longtemps est resté au seuil de cette œuvre immense avant de se confronter, en 2010, à Oh les beaux jours et maintenant à La dernière bande. Trente-cinq ans après sa rencontre avec l’écrivain, venu le voir dans les coulisses après l’une de ses premières pièces, le metteur en scène ose « relever le défi » et monter lui-même sur le plateau. « Lorsque je dirige un travail, je crée une structure installée dans le temps. Enfin, lorsque tous les éléments visuels sont en place, je crée un cadre que les interprètes remplissent. Si la structure est solide, alors chacun s’y sent libre. ». Lumières impeccablement dessinées, lignes tranchantes, aplats colorés, gestique stylisée, clairs-obscurs et contre-jours étudiés… L’esthétique très précise du maître américain trace le cadre où devra résonner l’écriture de Beckett.
