La mère de l’auteur, ancienne sage-femme qui a passé sa vie à donner la vie, annonce à ses enfants la fin décidée de ses jours, comme le départ d’un voyage. Après préliminaires et ordonnancements, la date est fixée un mois et demi plus tard. Le temps change dès lors de matière, il ne se compte pas, il se décompte. La dame âgée souhaite « mourir debout, mourir seule avant que la maladie ou la démence ne décide pour elle ». Elle part parce que c’est l’heure, un ordre des choses. Pour celle qui s’efforce ainsi d’attenter à ses jours, l’existence n’a plus aucune surprise et la décision de couper court se fait en toute lucidité. Mais, comme l’enfant attentive à ses parents, Noëlle Châtelet, « la femme dont l’autonomie a toujours été une raison d’être », n’est guère prête à entendre des mots qui dégagent aussi sèchement le froid du néant. La mère croyait pourtant ses enfants préparés à écouter ce chant du cygne. À travers La Dernière Leçon, une lettre rédigée à la mère après sa disparition, l’auteur raconte ce gouffre existentiel vertigineux dans lequel elle tombe, à la façon de La Tombe du Plongeur de Paestum, une image magnifique sur l’écran de Jean-Pierre Lescot – nuit immense étoilée et bleutée, fracturée par une faille sombre.
Mots de la souffrance
La mort n’est jamais si fortement éprouvée que dans celle de l’être cher. L’absence lancinante est présente à chaque instant et n’apaise jamais. Cette crainte angoissée de la perte définitive relève de l’intérêt que chacun prend à son existence comme à un destin. L’importance accordée à la vie humaine individuelle ne connaît pas de contours, de repères, de limites brutes. Catherine Rétoré semble comme accroupie, en déséquilibre sur un plateau incliné – pont de navire en déroute maritime, large page blanche ou apprêts soyeux du lit de mort sacré. La comédienne dit l’indicible : « Je me suis prise en défaut d’amour, j’étais jalouse de ton amie la mort ». Les mots de la souffrance tentent de ressaisir celle qui reste, entre l’ombre de la mère dessinée sur la toile lumineuse, grâce à une marionnette à dimension humaine, et d’autres effigies miniaturisées, des figures énigmatiques du mystère du bout de la vie. Un dernier repas où l’hôtesse en partance déguste des huîtres tandis que sa fille se perd dans la contemplation de sa beauté : « Je te vois aujourd’hui pour la dernière fois. Tu vas te suicider la semaine prochaine. » Il fallait le tact de Gérald Chatelain, l’élégance de Catherine Rétoré, les images de Jean-Pierre Lescot et les marionnettistes Sylvain Blanchard et Natacha Stoyanova pour créer cette sérénité.
