Se revendiquant d’un « théâtre existentiel et humaniste », Alain Foix met en scène trois personnages historiques dont il imagine le dialogue : Luther King, sa femme, Coretta, et Abu-Jamal, militant des Black Panthers, accusé d’un crime qu’il n’a pas commis, et qui resta pendant trente ans dans le couloir de la mort. Il s’agit, pour Alain Foix, d’interroger et de croiser les rapports à la mort de ces deux hommes en sursis : Luther King parce qu’il se savait menacé, Abu-Jamal parce qu’il se savait condamné. Coretta, chanteuse de gospel, intermédiaire entre les deux hommes par sa présence et par son art, est celle qui « gère pour Martin Luter King le conflit entre violence et non-violence », et donc la question du rapport à la mort dans la lutte.
La violence, la non-violence et l’amour
Cette pièce se veut un drame en musique : le jeu et le chant y sont intimement liés. La scène est découpée en deux espaces par une vitre : derrière celle-ci se situe le prisonnier Abu-Jamal, parlant à travers un micro, tantôt très proche, tantôt très lointain. Le militant condamné n’a jamais rencontré l’adepte de la non-violence, mais il fut arrêté au moment de la vague de violence dont les Black Panthers furent partie prenante, et qui se déchaîna après la mort du défenseur des droits civiques. En écrivant le dialogue entre le pasteur et le prisonnier (en écho au roman biographique intitulé Martin Luther King par Alain Foix, publié en octobre 2012 aux éditions Gallimard), le dramaturge et metteur en scène permet la confrontation entre des hommes différents et le conflit dialectique entre les postures qu’ils revendiquent et les valeurs qu’ils incarnent : la violence, la non-violence et l’amour, dont la mise en jeu, dit Alain Foix, « est pour moi une dimension essentielle du théâtre ».
