Comme l’a brillamment écrit l’universitaire belge Georges Poulet dans ses Etudes sur le temps humain* : « Sans identité, sans mémoire, sans origine, tombé des nues, l’être marivaudien atterrit dans un monde indescriptible. Rien n’y est reconnaissable ; rien par conséquent n’y est intelligible. Rien ne s’y relie à rien. C’est l’Empire de la Lune et le Royaume de l’Actuel. » La Dispute (sans doute la pièce la plus métaphysique de Marivaux) offre un point de vue particulièrement aigu sur ce royaume, sur cet empire. S’opposant à propos des fondements de l’infidélité, des prédispositions respectives de l’homme et de la femme à l’inconstance amoureuse, un Prince (Thierry Hancisse) et son amante (Hermiane, Marie-Sophie Ferdane) observent les agissements de quatre jeunes gens mis en présence les uns des autres après avoir été élevés, séparément, à l’écart de la société. Scrutateurs de ces « âmes neuves » qu’ils souhaitent voir vivre comme dans le « premier âge du monde », les deux aristocrates entrés « en dispute » assistent à un joyeux ballet d’émois et de saisissements intimes, de rivalités narcissiques, de conflits relationnels, d’étonnements et de découvertes sur soi, sur l’autre.
Quand un Prince décide de réinventer le « premier âge du monde »
Un ballet certes joyeux, plein de vivacité, mais pas moins grave, pas moins féroce. Car, la représentation élaborée par Muriel Mayette (la scénographie et les lumières sont d’Yves Bernard) souligne la cruauté avec laquelle Eglé (Anne Kessler), Adine (Véronique Vella), Azor (Benjamin Jungers) et Mesrin (Stéphane Varupenne) sont manipulés. Tels des pantins, des cobayes humains pris au piège d’un pernicieux laboratoire, les quatre adolescents ne cessent de se heurter aux murs de l’espace clos au sein duquel un couple de domestiques (Carise, Bakary Sangaré ; Mesrou, Eebra Tooré) organise leurs allers et venues. Il y a quelque chose d’assez inquiétant dans le tableau sombre et sans joie, presque tragique, que composent ces quatre personnages rejoints par deux nouveaux individus soumis à la même expérience. La vision finale de ces six êtres hagards, perdus, uniformément vêtus de blancs, rompt subitement avec la dimension piquante et cocasse que les Comédiens français conféraient jusque-là à la représentation. Passant ainsi de la lumière à l’obscurité, de la jubilation au trouble, ce spectacle d’une grande clarté s’impose comme une belle réussite.
