Toute de noir vêtue, au sein d’un intérieur entièrement rouge, brushée et laquée à l’extrême, maquillée à l’avenant, Claire Nadeau fait son entrée sur scène dans un élan lui aussi haut en couleur : maintien altier, déhanchements chaloupés, balancements de bras. En somme, Claire Nadeau fait son entrée en Claire Nadeau, du moins dans la peau de l’une des figures archétypales qui ont fait son succès : la bourgeoise joyeusement baroque, gentiment excentrique. Cette fois-ci, cette personnalité sortie du moule est une icône du monde de la mode, Diana Vreeland (1903-1989), grande papesse du chic des années 1960, rédactrice en chef redoutée du Vogue américain de 1962 à 1971. C’est peu après l’onde de choc de son licenciement — qui mit fin à son règne sur un claquement de doigts — que cette femme humiliée se présente au public, tentant de conserver son panache comme son sens de l’humour, mais révélant en contre-jour ses inquiétudes et sa profonde détresse. Coécrit par l’auteur américain Mark Hampton et la comédienne Mary Louise Wilson (qui fut à l’origine de ce projet d’écriture), La Divine Miss V. (Full Gallop) est un prétexte de monologue fabriqué comme un divertissement sensible et mélancolique.
Une idée de grandeur et de décadence
Confessions, anecdotes, aphorismes sur la vie et sur le goût entrecoupés d’incessantes conversations téléphoniques : ce qui pourrait être un moment plein de drôlerie et de tendresse, une jolie réflexion sur les revers du destin, se révèle un spectacle tout juste distrayant. Car la faiblesse d’un texte cousu de fil blanc et d’une mise en scène indigente ruinent tout espoir d’élévation, toute perspective d’envergure et d’enthousiasme artistiques. Pourtant, dans le personnage de la mondaine flamboyante, de la maîtresse femme déchue, Claire Nadeau ne démérite pas. Elle fait même preuve de quelques instants d’émotion assez prenants. Mettant à profit la nature qui est la sienne, la comédienne apparaît comme une bouffée d’oxygène au sein d’une représentation de laquelle se dégage une irritante impression d’opportunisme et de dilettantisme. Comme si l’on s’était contenté, d’un côté comme de l’autre de l’Atlantique, de chercher à exploiter un filon rentable : là, l’image d’une icône extravagante ; ici, la popularité d’une tête d’affiche pour laquelle le rôle semble taillé sur mesure.
