Ils s’aimaient d’un amour qu’ils croyaient éternel. Absolu. Un amour d’enfants, en quelque sorte – sentiment issu de cœurs purs, d’êtres qui n’ont pas encore été contaminés par les doutes et les compromissions du monde. Le couple que forment Sylvia et Arlequin va pourtant devoir faire face aux manigances d’un prince qui, lui aussi, est tombé sous le charme de la jeune villageoise. Un prince qui n’a nulle intention de laisser à un autre celle sur laquelle il a jeté son dévolu. Il met alors en branle une double machination visant à mettre les deux amoureux sur la voie de l’inconstance.
Un jeu de massacre amoureux
Pour mettre en scène ce jeu de massacre amoureux, Philippe Calvario (qui incarne également, en alternance avec Roger Contebardo, le rôle de Trivelin) a plongé l’œuvre de Marivaux dans l’univers d’un conte. Un conte sombre qui imagine « l’action de la pièce resserrée en une nuit de tous les possibles, une sorte de nuit de la Saint-Jean où les esprits seraient de sortie et où les pactes d’amour s’envoleraient avec les feuilles des arbres ». Le directeur de la Compagnie Saudade rapproche sa vision de la Double Inconstance des pastorales de Shakespeare, mais aussi des Liaisons dangereuses de Choderlos de Laclos. Il propose un théâtre de troubles et des paradoxes qui traversent les corps et les âmes.
