Dans ses comédies d’analyse du cœur, Marivaux joue à volonté des principaux procédés de sa logique facétieuse et cruelle en ce qui concerne l’amour. Le travestissement, l’inconstance, l’épreuve et le préjugé social tiennent lieu de parcours obligé pour les amants en puissance. Dans La Double Inconstance, le spectateur assiste à un chassé-croisé d’amoureux. Le Prince enlève Silvia, jeune villageoise et amante d’Arlequin. Armé de son pouvoir, le maître use et abuse de toute ses malices, mensonges, corruptions, tentations et larmes d’amour…. On trouve toujours raison à tout, comme à la colère de Silvia et à la violence d’Arlequin. Nicolas Hocquenghem et ses comédiens de la Compagnie Théâ trale de la Cité, de véritables spécialistes du vers classique, apprennent une nouvelle langue en prose. Une façon bien à eux d’avancer ensemble dans le siècle, et de jouer leur engagement d’artiste contemporain inscrit dans la cité. Un bonheur de scène éternellement juvénile.
