En 1937, Chostakovitch crée sa Cinquième symphonie, sous-titrée par lui-même comme la "réponse d’un compositeur soviétique aux justes critiques". Elle marque son retour en grâce autant que son répit (et dépit) de plier sous le joug du pouvoir après les graves attaques et critiques dont il fut l’objet suite à la création de son opéra Lady Macbeth du District de Mzensk. L’année suivante, il entame la composition d’un prodigieux corpus de quinze quatuors à cordes qui représenteront, jusqu’à sa mort en 1975, son échappatoire et son jardin secret. Les 15 quatuors sont souvent considérés comme le journal intime, la part la plus profonde et sincère de son œuvre, là où se lit le mieux, comme à cœur ouvert, la sensibilité, la modernité et le drame intérieur de cet artiste écrasé par l’histoire. À la MC 93 de Bobigny, le légendaire Quatuor Chostakovitch, fondé à Moscou en 1966, nous offre de plonger dans cet océan de musiques exigeantes, visionnaires et géniales, exaltantes de modernité dans les mouvements rapides, écrasantes d’émotion et de beauté dans les poignants mouvements lents. Des concerts essentiels.
