On connait moins La Fanciulla Del West de Puccini que ses grands succès tels que La Bohème, Tosca ou Madame Butterfly. Si cette page a longtemps été délaissée, c’est qu’elle fait figure d’exception dans la production lyrique du compositeur. Avec La fille du Far West, le compositeur décide de s’aventurer sur un terrain plus expérimental. On y décèle l’influence de compositeurs comme Richard Strauss ou Debussy. Son langage tend vers une écriture plus riche pour l’orchestre, une instrumentation plus recherchée, mais aussi des innovations sur le plan harmonique. Si cet opéra n’offre pas aux chanteurs des rôles spectaculaires, il mérite d’être remis au goût du jour. Le livret, signé Guelfo Civinini et Carlo Zangarini, raconte l’histoire de Minnie, tenancière du saloon La Polka, en Californie. Un lieu où vont se réfugier les chercheurs d’or, et qui devient le théâtre d’affrontements et d’histoires d’amour… Pour cette nouvelle production, les rôles principaux sont tenus par la soprano suédoise Nina Stemme, à la voix puissante et charnelle, le baryton Claudio Sgura et le ténor Marco Berti, particulièrement à l’aise dans la musique de Puccini. C’est le très wagnérien Nikolaus Lehnhoff qui signe la mise en scène. Dans la fosse, on retrouve le chef italien toujours efficace Carlo Rizzi à la tête de l’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Paris.
