« Quiconque n’aime pas Snegourotchka ne comprend rien à ma musique ni à ma personne », disait Rimski-Korsakov de sa Fille de neige plus de dix ans après sa création. Inspiré par la pièce de théâtre d’Alexandre Ostrovski, cet opéra – le troisième du compositeur – est donné pour la première fois en 1882 au Théâtre Mariinski. S’il comprend de nombreux thèmes folkloriques, ce n’est pas un conte de fées, contrairement à ce que peut laisser croire le titre. Selon le metteur en scène Dmitri Tcherniakov, « c’est l’un des opéras russes les plus sensuels : il y a des sentiments, de l’érotisme, des intrigues d’amour et des passions ». Pour donner corps à l’orchestration brillante de Rimski-Korsakov, la baguette est confiée à Mikhail Tatarnikov, tandis que la jeune soprano colorature qui monte, Aida Garifullina, incarne le rôle-titre avec Ramon Vargas comme partenaire.
