Créé par Dauberval au Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, quelques jours avant la prise de la Bastille, le ballet La Fille mal gardée repose sur un sujet qui marque une rupture par rapport au répertoire de la fin du XVIIIe siècle : deux jeunes paysans s’aiment, mais la mère de la fille veut la marier au fils d’un riche fermier… Ni Dieu, ni créature mythologique, mais un argument emprunté à la vie quotidienne, offrant aux danseurs la possibilité d’incarner des êtres de chair et de sang. Frederick Ashton, dans sa version, tire tout le parti possible de cette histoire à la fois cocasse et sensible. Il met en valeur la virtuosité des solistes, tout en conservant des caractères originaux du ballet : l’utilisation de rubans et les portés du pas de deux final, notamment, relient cette version à la richesse des multiples recréations qui ont jalonné les XIXe et XXe siècles.
