Le parler rustique et truculent, poétique et gaillard des personnages créés par Synge à partir de ses explorations ethnographiques en Irlande et en particulier dans les îles d’Aran constitue le matériau premier de ce théâtre original qui mêle avec bonheur les paraboles du mythe et le prosaïque de son incarnation prolétaire. Le remarquable travail de Françoise Morvan, qui transcrit avec brio en français les pépites de la langue de Synge est pour beaucoup dans la réussite de ce spectacle dont le texte parvient, par sa force créatrice, à faire éclore des paysages mentaux originaux puissamment évocateurs. Mais la force de l’écriture ne serait rien sans le talent des comédiens qui s’en emparent et qui parviennent à camper des personnages sympathiques et bouleversants d’humanité. Les interprètes de La Fontaine aux saints donnent ainsi naissance à tout un petit peuple bigarré et drôle mais c’est dans Les Noces du rétameur, sorte de lever de rideau enlevé et remarquablement rythmé, que les acteurs excellent à faire jaillir en images le monde qu’évoquent leurs répliques. Parmi eux, Flore Lefebvre des Noëttes et Carolina Pecheny-Durozier brillent d’une insolente aisance.
Ombre et lumière irlandaises
Guy-Pierre Couleau a choisi de mettre en scène les deux pièces dans un décor unique fait d’un plateau de bois vallonné qui évoque les lignes et les harmonies chromatiques de la campagne irlandaise. L’élégance des costumes répond à la fluidité des déplacements, le tout composant des tableaux simples et beaux dans lesquels se déploient les aventures de ces petites gens. Goguenards et bavards, amateur d’alcool et de bons mots, ces belles filles et ces gars courageux réalisent l’union d’un catholicisme superstitieux et d’un panthéisme magique et joyeux (qu’évoquent les très belles images d’un bestiaire en ombres chinoises projetées dans la première partie). Les comédiens incarnent avec une formidable énergie ces personnages folkloriques : Philippe Mercier est un épatant Martin Doul, cabot paresseux résistant avec audace à la volonté de normalisation de ceux qui le forcent au travail en le rendant à la vue dans La Fontaine aux saints et Anne Mauberret est, face à lui, une Molly Byrne à l’émouvante sensualité. Les deux pièces ainsi mises en perspective par Guy-Pierre Couleau composent un spectacle esthétiquement abouti qui sert avec adresse la musicalité de la langue et le pittoresque de l’univers de John Millington Synge.
