En réunissant de nouveau l’équipe qui avait proposé Le Chanteur de Mexico pour sa réouverture en septembre 2006, le Châtelet ne prend guère le risque de la grisaille. Après l’opérette française, certes mâtinée d’influences latino-carnavalesques, Emilio Sagi se rapproche de son histoire familiale en mettant en scène La Generala. La zarzuela, un genre de comédie musicale profondément ancré dans la culture espagnole, était en effet le quotidien de ses grand-pères, père et oncle avant même qu’il ne dirige à son tour le célèbre Teatro de la Zarzuela de Madrid. Avec son scénographe Daniel Bianco, Emilio Sagi propose donc une lecture idiomatique, non sans quelque liberté, comme on peut l’imaginer. José Fabra dirige la musique d’Amadeo Vives, réputé grand admirateur de Massenet.
