OPÉRA BASTILLE / NOUVELLE PRODUCTION
Pour son seul véritable grand succès public, Amilcare Ponchielli (1834-1886) a bénéficié de la contribution du librettiste Arrigo Boito, qui allait quelques années plus tard se mettre au service des derniers chefs-d’œuvre shakespeariens de Verdi, Otello puis Falstaff. Pour La Gioconda, c’est vers Victor Hugo (Angelo, tyran de Padoue) que se tourne Boito : il y trouve une intrigue qui lui permet de dérouler en quatre actes, sur une histoire d’amant éconduit, une série de thèmes et situations (espions, masques, procès en sorcellerie, désespoir…) propres à fabriquer des scènes grandioses, que Ponchieli traite avec habileté sinon avec génie. Défendu en son temps par Maria Callas, l’ouvrage, mis en scène par Pier Luigi Pizzi, est porté sur la scène de l’Opéra Bastille par Violetta Urmana.
