Une langue inventée mâtinée de patois, riche en crases pétillantes et en ellipses audacieuses, des personnages hauts en couleurs parlant dru et franc : La Gonfle oscille entre la facétie grotesque et le plus réalistement terrifiant des tableaux de mœurs. Une vieille hydropique, « la Bique », menace de « passer » sans avoir dit à qui reviendra son magot sur lequel louchent Gustave, son neveu vétérinaire et Andoche, son domestique et amant, par ailleurs sacristain. Pendant que les deux coquins usent d’une pompe à bestiaux pour « dégonfler » la mourante, « la Nioule », bonniche engrossée par leurs soins, accouche dans l’étable… Pièce écrite en 1928 et créée seulement soixante ans plus tard, La Gonfle, rabelaisienne et jubilatoire, est une farce acérée où la grivoiserie, la hargne et la cocasserie font assaut de saillies pour dire la méchanceté et la drôlerie sinistre des hommes que guident le sexe, la ruse et la cupidité. Jouée par quatre comédiens, dont deux travestis, selon la volonté de Roger Martin du Gard, son auteur, cette pièce est pour Patrick Pelloquet, son metteur en scène, « une nouvelle étape sur les chemin de la comédie humaine » où la noirceur se rit du bon goût.
