Quand les pièges et les subtilités de la langue française mettent à mal les ambitions politique d’un ancien négociant en bois de charpente… C’est le cœur de l’intrigue de La Grammaire, une comédie-vaudeville au sein de laquelle Eugène Labiche nous ouvre les portes d’une petite société de province sur le point d’élire le président de son comice agricole. « Eugène Labiche a bien l’intention de faire rire, mais il ne défigure pas, n’exagère et ne grossit pas, ne parodie pas, explique Hubert Jappelle. Simplement, si l’on peut dire, il montre tels qu’ils sont des bourgeois hypocrites, mesquins, vaniteux, lâches. » Souhaitant prendre au sérieux les aventures cocasses de cette course folle à la réussite (en lever de rideau, les comédiens interprètent L’Article 330 de Georges Courteline), le directeur du Théâtre de l’Usine défend une vision rigoureuse de La Grammaire. Une vision qui cherche à faire rire en évitant « le jeu dit comique » et en favorisant « [la] vérité, [la] sincérité, [la] précision ».
