Cette histoire pourrait ne prêter qu’à rire. Qu’à se moquer gentiment d’un mari crédule (Calogero Di Spelta, Denis Podalydès) qui se laisse trop facilement convaincre que sa femme (Marta, Coraly Zahonero) est enfermée à l’intérieur de la petite boîte que vient de lui remettre un magicien de foire (Otto Marvuglia, Hervé Pierre). On pourrait se dire que le tour que lui joue cette épouse partie rejoindre son amant (Mariano D’Albino, Michel Favory) n’a rien de bien méchant. Mais, ce qui ne devait être qu’une escapade amoureuse d’une quinzaine de minutes se prolonge près de quatre années, quatre années durant lesquelles Calogero se laisse dépérir, ne parvenant pas à dissiper l’illusion dans laquelle l’a plongé le prestidigitateur. Cette histoire s’ouvre en définitive à une forme de maillage extrêmement fin, un maillage fait de liesse et de gravité, de facéties et d’émotion, de paillettes et de profondeurs introspectives. Car tout l’art d’Eduardo de Filippo réside dans cette manière de faire s’entremêler situations bouffonnes et drames personnels, cette manière de nourrir la farce de tragédie et la tragédie de farce.
Hervé Pierre : un grand illusionniste
Cette dimension composite, l’auteur napolitain la place au centre de son projet théâtral, caractérisant celui-ci comme « la correspondance idéale entre vie et spectacle, la fusion tantôt harmonieuse, tantôt grinçante, entre rires et larmes, grotesque et sublime ». Sur la scène de la Salle Richelieu, Dan Jemmett offre un cadre de belle facture à ce théâtre éminemment populaire dans lequel les Comédiens-Français plongent avec fougue et bonheur. Car cette Grande Magie apparaît avant tout comme un beau spectacle de troupe, un spectacle essentiellement centré sur des acteurs qui le lui rendent bien. Claude Mathieu en pittoresque Assistante de magicien, Cécile Brune en Inspecteur de police, Loïc Corbery en Garçon d’hôtel… Ainsi, quelle que soit l’importance de son rôle, chacun apporte sa touche de brio à la représentation chorale élaborée par le metteur en scène. Au centre de cette distribution à l’investissement sans faille, Hervé Pierre impose une nouvelle fois la singularité de son talent. Cocasse, touchant, facétieux…, le comédien confère au spectacle de Dan Jemmett la poésie et la profondeur d’un grand illusionniste.
