En arrivant à la tête de la Comédie de Béthune, en juillet 2004, Thierry Roisin a demandé à pouvoir consulter les comptes rendus des conseils municipaux relatifs aux deux années précédant sa nomination. Cela, afin de faire connaissance avec cette ville et ses habitants, afin de s’informer des différents enjeux liés au quotidien de la cité. C’est à partir de ce matériau (mais aussi d’extraits de textes littéraires, notamment de La République de Platon, d’entretiens réalisés auprès de maires vivant sur l’ensemble du territoire français, de discussions amenant des citoyens à creuser le rapport intime qui les lie à leur ville) que le metteur en scène a élaboré La Grenouille et l’architecte. « Ce spectacle se déroule comme une suite disparate de séquences, explique-t-il. Mon propos n’est pas de renvoyer un miroir exact de la réalité, mais de rendre sensible un propos, de présenter des points de vue divers en inventant une théâtralité adaptée à tous ces textes. » Mêlant des perspectives littéraires, documentaires, musicales, plastiques, vidéo…, Thierry Roisin a souhaité concevoir une représentation composée de champs de sensations et de réflexions très contrastés. Une représentation à l’esprit parfois satirique, qui questionne la vie citoyenne et démocratique en évitant l’écueil du didactisme.
