Depuis sa fondation en 1990, le Concours de direction Donatella Flick n’avait couronné aucune cheffe d’orchestre au cours de ses douze premières éditions. Elim Chan est donc celle qui la première, en 2014, a inscrit son nom à la suite de ses alter ego masculins François-Xavier Roth, David Afkham ou Alexandre Bloch. La jeune Hongkongaise de 28 ans s’ouvre alors les portes de l’Orchestre symphonique de Londres dont elle est nommée cheffe assistante, et travaille auprès de Bernard Haitink à Lucerne et Gustavo Dudamel à Los Angeles.
D’Anvers à Toulouse
Nommée à la tête de l’Orchestre symphonique d’Anvers en 2018 après avoir conquis les musiciens en seulement deux concerts, elle est également principale cheffe invitée de l’Orchestre royal national d’Écosse. Les musiciens soulignent la clarté de sa direction, sa facilité à communiquer ses intentions. À l’écoute, on retient surtout l’énergie qui anime ses interprétations. Le programme qu’elle dirige en juin prochain à Toulouse est taillé pour cette virtuose avec L’Apprenti sorcier de Dukas et le Concerto pour orchestre de Bartók, l’une de ses œuvres fétiches. Elle y retrouve également le pianiste Bertrand Chamayou, l’un de ses partenaires de prédilection, dans le Concerto « égyptien » de Saint-Saëns.
