L’ouverture de La Jeune Fille et la Mort est grave, presque annonciatrice d’une catastrophe : dans un espace tendu de blanc, un homme nu traverse la scène, la tête aux prises avec les crocs d’une bête empaillée. Anne Sophie Lancelin, dans le rôle-titre, apparaît lisse, tendue, toute à ce qui doit advenir, face à ce que lui renvoient ses consœurs d’un autre âge. Si la partition de Schubert a déjà inspiré des chorégraphes (Michèle-Anne de Mey avait fait de ses jeunes filles des corps vibrants de liberté), Thomas Lebrun prend quant à lui les choses au pied de la lettre. Les mouvements s’inspirent largement des variations de la musique, tandis que les danseurs explorent les lignes de force entre la vie et la mort. La gestuelle, qui emprunte à un certain expressionnisme, dans un souci de la forme et de la pause proche de la statuaire, donne à la pièce une épaisseur singulière, à contrepoint de certaines exubérances du chorégraphe.
