Hélène Cathala traite dans La jeune fille que la rivière n’a pas gardée du passage de l’enfance à la maturité, de l’adolescence à l’âge adulte. L’adolescence et la danse ont en commun le rapport à sa propre image et au jeu, à l’envie de tester les limites et de le faire avec brutalité. La chorégraphe dit avoir ressenti une grande familiarité corporelle avec la jeune danseuse Nina Santes qui interprète la jeune fille. Entre écriture et temps d’improvisation libre, la danseuse incarne la possibilité de réchapper aux flots de la rivière qui l’emporte pour trouver ainsi sa voie. La danseuse est plongée dans le courant, elle pourrait être engloutie, comme l’Ophélie de Shakespeare, éconduite par Hamlet et orpheline de son père, qui se noie dans une rivière. Grâce à une installation de capteurs à infrarouges et de nappes sonores, la danse semble l’esquisse d’un portrait gestuel ou bien une fugue échevelée. Cette danse défie l’arrêt sur image et s’accomplit dans le plaisir selon les possibilités de jeu, d’esquive, de flottement et de dérive. Un mystère des plus envoûtants.
