En province, au cœur d’une jolie ville à la benoîte quiétude, dans un appartement tenu par une bonne, un professeur bienveillant reçoit une élève polie. Jean-Pierre Brière trouve dans le fiel de Thomas Bernhard la réponse explicite à l’absurde de Ionesco : sous l’apparence normalité des personnages couvent des monstres sanglants. Le conatus pervers (tel que le conçoit Spinoza), qui fait s’obstiner les deux protagonistes de La Leçon dans leur position d’élève qui ne veut rien apprendre et de maître qui ne veut pas enseigner, les conduit de l’incompréhension au meurtre. Tout est dynamité des assises logiques de la réalité et du sens, l’arithmétique s’affole et la bonne finit par devoir nettoyer la scène du crime. Mais, comme le remarque Jean-Pierre Brière, « il est question d’en rire finalement » et on assiste, comme toujours chez Ionesco, à un plaisir du parler libéré du sens qui passe par des saturations délirantes et un goût du grotesque désopilant et jouissif. Reste au spectateur à déterminer la nature de la leçon reçue. « Surtout pas de philologie, la philologie mène au pire. » dit la bonne. Une leçon de morale, alors, peut-être, nous invitant à retrouver les voies de la communicabilité…
