Ceux qui connaissent les éditions Zulma savent à quel point cette maison d’édition exigeante publie de belles pépites, notamment dans le domaine étranger. Le court roman de l’Islandais Bergsveinn Birgisson (né en 1971) en fait partie. Lors de sa sortie en France, en 2013, dans la traduction de Catherine Eyjolfsson, le texte s’est d’ailleurs taillé un joli succès. L’histoire est celle d’un vieil homme de 90 ans, Bjarni Gislason, qui, de retour sur sa terre, écrit une lettre à Helga, la femme qu’il a aimée mais qu’il n’a pas osé suivre, comme elle l’en suppliait : ils étaient chacun mariés de leur côté et il ne voulait pas quitter la campagne pour la ville. Celui qui se décrit comme « un vieux tronc de bois flotté qui se dérobe au grand amour », lui adresse donc post mortem le plus beau des chants qui est aussi une évocation d’une vie paysanne traditionnelle islandaise. Pour le metteur en scène Claude Bonin, « le cri de Bjarni se lit d’une traite, son adaptation à la scène portée par Roland Depauw sera de même, livrant d’un souffle la prose du vieil homme ».
