Metteur en scène amoureux de la belle littérature, Jacques Lassalle affirme l’importance de l’acte d’écrire pour lui, même s’il n’a publié que huit titres et que son activité de metteur en scène surtout l’occupe. Pour La Madone des poubelles, le désir d’écriture est né de la confrontation marquante avec l’Argentine, au début des années 2000, alors que le pays avait sombré dans une crise économique terrible, engendrant de vives tensions sociales et une paupérisation alarmante de la société. Le nombre des cartoneros, qui trouvent dans les poubelles des quartiers riches de Buenos Aires un moyen de subsistance, avait alors explosé et souvent ils étaient soumis à la mafia. La pièce orchestre la rencontre entre Lola, dont le père s’est reconverti dans un gang de cartoneros, et de Gratien, jeune cadre français subjugué par la beauté de la jeune fille. Il éprouve la mauvaise conscience de l’habitant d’une puissance occidentale plongé dans un pays en pleine détresse. « Une histoire sans perspective et sans issue. Une tragédie bouffe composée d’un principe de survie et d’une capacité à ré-enchanter l’ordinaire. L’Argentine comme une fin de partie absolue… » confiait dans nos colonnes l’auteur et metteur en scène. « Cousine lointaine de la Lolita de Vladimir Nabokov », cette Lola célèbre pourtant malgré la déroute effarante de Buenos Aires la puissance de la vie.
