Il s’agit d’un « espace de poussière qui oscille entre réel et irréel », d’une « maison grande comme un château » au sein de laquelle circulent « un corps grand comme une maison », ainsi que toutes sortes de « personnages qui surgissent du néant et y retournent aussi vite ». Très vite, « on ne sait plus où on est », continue d’expliquer Anne-Laure liégeois, « en haut, en bas, sur terre, déjà en enfer ou au paradis, dedans, dehors… ». Sortie de l’imaginaire foisonnant de Roland Dubillard (1923-2011), La Maison d’os est comme une métaphore de l’existence qui prend fin. Dans cette demeure improbable, un vieillard est d’ailleurs en train de mourir, entouré d’une pléiade de domestiques. « C’est une pièce sur la mort, (…) sur l’abandon de la mort », a déclaré Roland Dubillard dans une interview donnée aux Nouvelles littéraires, en 1962. Une pièce traversée par toute l’ironie et toute la noirceur loufoque d’un des maîtres du théâtre de l’absurde.
