Théâtre des Carmes / d'Alain Guyard d'après Diderot / mes François Bourcier
Le dialogue initial, composé par Diderot, met en scène un philosophe athée venu rendre visite à un homme chez lequel il ne trouve que sa femme, la dévote maréchale, avec laquelle il entame une conversation sur la religion. Sous la plume d’Alain Guyard, le monologue initial, qui voyait triompher le libre penseur ennemi des superstitions, cède la place à une authentique dispute, dans laquelle la maréchale « devenue cynique, hédoniste, ambigüe, transforme le libertinage en grand art, ironie, dissimulation sensuelle des âmes plus encore qu’offrande facile des corps ». Le philosophe se voit ainsi remis en cause dans ses certitudes et ses utopies par une interlocutrice « divine et décadente », non plus faire-valoir médiocre et insipide, mais bretteuse intelligente et brillante. Ce spectacle se veut un « hommage en forme de griffe aux Lumières », où « la joute tourne à un hymne à la vie ».
