Peu montée, peut-être parce que figée dans un stéréotype abusif de pièce misogyne, La Mégère apprivoisée (The Taming of the Shrew) se révèle une comédie de mœurs savoureuse, plus riche et complexe que prévu. Un homme riche annonce qu’il consentira au mariage de sa fille cadette, la belle Bianca, à condition qu’il parvienne à caser aussi l’indomptable aînée, Catarina, aux paroles fielleuses. Le valeureux et désargenté Petruchio relève le défi, et s’engage alors un combat fougueux entre ces deux personnalités, sincères et ardentes. La compagnie Les Têtes de Bois, qui utilise diverses techniques et expressions artistiques – masques balinais, commedia dell’arte, etc –, installe les protagonistes dans une arène modulable et s’attache à « rendre perceptible le tragique latent » sous le grotesque et la farce. Dans une esthétique qui oscille entre réalisme et non-réalisme, jouant de toutes sortes de déséquilibres et métamorphoses et s’appuyant sur les multiples ressorts dramatiques, la troupe révèle l’excès et l’exacerbation qui caractérisent les relations. Un combat effréné et tortueux vers la vérité du cœur !
