Les années 30 aux États-Unis, la Dépression, la crise économique, l’approche de la guerre, c’est dans ce contexte inconfortable que T. Williams inscrit La Ménagerie de verre, comédie cruelle à caractère autobiographique. Abandonnée, une mère élève un garçon et une fille à l’aube de leur émancipation. Ce garçon cherche à s’échapper du foyer familial pour vivre, portant dans son cœur une sœur handicapée. Dans la pièce, la mère insatisfaite initie une stratégie pour « placer » cette fille, engageant son fils à « inviter » un ami qui pourrait faire l’affaire. « La pièce est faite de souvenirs, sentimentale, non réaliste. Dans le souvenir, tout semble se passer en musique », dit T. Williams. Cette dimension poétique liée à un contexte social troublé a tenté Jacques Nichet dans le dévoilement scénique de l’œuvre, un scénario de cinéma adapté pour le théâtre par l’auteur lui-même. La réalité est transcendée par le pouvoir des images diffusées sur écran – souvenirs, rêves, puissances de l’imaginaire – , mêlant merveilleux et onirisme au miroir cruel et injuste du quotidien. Sensible aux mouvements du monde comme aux troubles intimes de l’angoisse existentielle, T.Williams est un dramaturge visionnaire. Nichet signe une lecture ample et bercée de cruauté grotesque, de mélancolie, de fantaisie et de mélodrame. Un cocktail volontairement frappé d’ « un thème joyeux qui soit triste », comme une musique de Fellini.
