C’est tout d’abord sous la forme d’une nouvelle (Portrait d’une jeune fille en verre), puis d’un scénario (Le Galant) que Tennessee Williams raconta l’histoire familiale dévoilée par La Ménagerie de verre. Cette pièce, grâce à laquelle il connut une célébrité fulgurante à l’âge de 34 ans, s’inspire de ses propres souvenirs familiaux, souvenirs qu’il a transcendés pour créer une œuvre empreinte d’humour et de poésie. Comme beaucoup de personnages surgis de l’imaginaire de l’auteur américain, les protagonistes de La Ménagerie de verre sont des êtres qui naviguent entre leurs instabilités intimes et les impossibilités devant lesquelles les place l’existence. Ainsi, AmandaWingfield (Luce Mouchel), femme abandonnée par son époux, est la mère d’une fille infirme, timide et complexée (Laura, Agathe Molière) à laquelle elle désespère de trouver un « bon mari ». Quant à son fils (Tom, Stéphane Facco), narrateur et double de l’auteur, il ne rêve que d’une chose : fuir le plus vite possible un foyer qui l’étouffe et le coupe de ses ambitions profondes. Finissant par répondre aux appels de sa mère, il invite l’un de ses collègues de travail à dîner (Jim, Michaël Abiteboul) afin de le présenter à sa sœur…
Les gros plans de la mémoire
« La pièce est faite de souvenirs, indique Tennessee Williams. A ce titre, elle est faiblement éclairée, sentimentale, non réaliste. » Suivant les indications de l’auteur, Jacques Nichet a conçu une mise en scène conjuguant clairs et obscurs. Une mise en scène à l’esthétique abstraite qui prend ses appuis sur les qualités d’incarnation et d’intériorité des quatre remarquables comédiens auxquels il a fait appel. Cette représentation sans accessoires et sans éléments de décor (qui laisse apparaître, en fond de scène, des images, des vidéos, des extraits de films, des éclats de textes…) a tout d’un univers mental. L’univers mental d’un narrateur qui, en rejouant quelques gros plans de son passé, nous offre la vision de scènes et de personnages d’une grande sensibilité. Refusant tout accent mélodramatique, toute facilité emphatique, Jacques Nichet a ainsi su guider ses acteurs jusqu’à des territoires d’interprétation pleins de justesse et d’exigence. Des territoires qui mêlent, eux aussi, clairs et obscurs pour faire percer le rire sous la gravité, et la gravité sous le rire.
