L’auteur, Frédéric Naud, fait entendre la vie « sanchopanchesque » de François Tosquelle, ce psychiatre catalan, membre du POUM, résistant et surréaliste, décidé à révolutionner les mœurs asilaires, profondément convaincu que « sans la reconnaissance humaine de la folie, c’est l’homme même qui disparaît ». Outre la trame biographique, la pièce s’inspire également du journal interne, tenu par les malades eux-mêmes, de l’hôpital psychiatrique où exerçait l’iconoclaste. Le titre de la pièce, « La méningite des poireaux », est d’ailleurs emprunté à une patiente qui y nommait ainsi sa maladie mentale. Sur scène, ils sont deux, la comédienne Jeanne Videau et l’auteur lui-même, dirigés par la metteuse en scène Marie-Charlotte Biais, laquelle s’est lancée dans l’aventure « conquise par la puissance dramaturgique et la poésie émouvante de cette évocation ».
