Angélique aime un jeune homme, mais celui-ci est pauvre. Promise par sa mère à un prétendant fortuné, la jeune femme se range à la raison et annonce à l’élu de son cœur que leur amour est impossible. Elle a pourtant bien du mal à renoncer à ses sentiments… C’est sur un plateau nu, au sein d’une scénographie bi-frontale, que Hubert Jappelle fait vivre les protagonistes de La Mère confidente. « Cette configuration (…) permet de libérer le jeu des contraintes optiques incontournables du jeu frontal, explique le metteur en scène. Seul importe ici le jeu des acteurs : les corps évoluent librement dans l’espace disponible. S’élabore ainsi une sorte de chorégraphie qui constitue la scénographie proprement dite. » Une chorégraphie à travers laquelle le directeur du Théâtre de l’Usine souhaite donner corps aux deux nécessités contradictoires qu’implique pour lui l’interprétation du théâtre de Marivaux : la mise en évidence « de comportements analysés au scalpel » et la naissance d’un jeu « d’une vitalité propre à donner le sentiment de (…) l’improvisation ».
