La peinture d’Edvard Munch est éminemment musicale. Ses compositions se prêtent à une analyse en termes de contrepoint (entre l’individu et la foule), de variation (les mêmes thèmes repris d’une toile à l’autre), on pourrait même dire de timbre, tant ses couleurs – entre éclat et ombre – font vibrer tout l’espace de ses tableaux. Il appartient à ce monde des arts qui se penche, le plus souvent inquiet sinon pessimiste, sur la condition de l’homme dans le monde moderne. Quelle musique pour s’assortir à sa peinture ? La voix sans aucun doute, par exemple les lieder de Richard Strauss, que Munch admirait et dont la mezzo-soprano Marianne Beate Kielland donne ici un florilège. Elle chante également les Six poèmes op. 25 de Grieg et le cycle L’Amour et la vie d’une femme de Schumann. Rencontre d’une musique et d’une peinture humaines, incarnées.
