En 1994, Ghérasim Luca se jetait dans la Seine après avoir essayé à cinq reprises de mettre fin à ses jours. La Mort morte, l’un de ses plus anciens textes qu’il n’avait pas cessé de retraduire depuis vingt ans, venait de paraître et exposait, avec une ironie d’autant plus grinçante, les différentes méthodes de suicide. Surréaliste roumain qui avait fait du français, selon le mot de Deleuze « sa langue à soi comme un étranger », Ghérasim Luca invente le langage comme on invente un trésor, dans le prodigieux bégaiement et la répétition obsédante de la syllabe. Il recompose le sens du monde à partir de juxtapositions, de crases, de rencontres presque hasardeuses et d’audaces libertaires : la glaise verbale devient matériau quasi musical et la langue explore l’indicible et le néant, et notamment celui de la mort, cette promesse, menace et risque constant de l’existence que Ghérasim Luca traversa en pessimiste actif. Avouant être taraudé depuis toujours par l’effroi de la « non-immortalité », le metteur en scène Laurent Mascles a découvert La Mort morte comme une « révélation ». En compagnie du foudroyant Luca, il conduit le spectateur sur le chemin poétique et métaphysique que dessine son verbe puissamment créatif.
